What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a durable, long-term teeth replacement alternative to removable dentures, whether partial or complete. If you are faced with the need to replace missing or badly damaged teeth, implants are an option that we advise giving serious consideration to. Providing exceptional support and stability for dental crowns, they are by far the superior choice for patients in such situations.

Dental implants, which are usually made of titanium, serve as the artificial roots for your new teeth, atop which dental crowns can then be placed. Implants are surgically placed directly into the jaw bone below the upper or lower gums. When crowns are placed on the implant posts, they are securely anchored to the bone and look very natural. When placed by our experienced dental implant specialists, it is possible to restore or enhance your smile in such a way that it can be next to impossible to distinguish them from your natural teeth.

What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

There are many benefits to dental implants that make them a superior choice for more permanent teeth replacement:

  • Implants make it feasible to replace one or more missing teeth without alteration of or damage to adjacent teeth.
  • Dental implants can help resolve bite problems and resultant TMJ issues.
  • They can prevent teeth from shifting into the space left by missing teeth.
  • Dental implants prevent your jaw bone from shrinking (or resorbing), which can cause your face to have a "sunken" appearance.
  • Dental implants stabilize teeth, thereby restoring speech and enabling you to chew food properly.
  • Implants provide stability of gum and jaw structures, which can have a striking effect on enhancing one's natural beauty.
  • Implants provide a means of fully restoring the aesthetic appearance of your smile.

What is Involved in the Dental Implant Process?

The process of placing dental implants requires multiple visits over a period of several months. In the first visit, Dr. Raanan will use the very latest in modern imaging technology to make impressions and molds of the jaw and teeth.

If you are interested in the technical aspect of how this is done, our office uses 3D Cone Beam Computed Tomography, or CBCT, for our imaging process. Dr. Raanan will gladly explain our technology in as much detail as you desire during your consultation.

The molds of your jaw and teeth enable Dr. Rifkin or Dr. Raanan to evaluate bone and gum tissue and thereby determine the proper spacing for your dental implants. Dr. Rifkin or Dr. Raanan will then work with a highly-experienced Beverly Hills dental implant specialists on our team who places the dental implants. Before further work is done, the bone will be allowed to heal, which allows the implant to become fully integrated into the jaw.

In some cases, it may be necessary to first administer a bone graft or grafts in order to properly prepare your jaw and ensure there is sufficient structure in which to place your implants. Some types of dental implants require additional surgery to place the "post" on which the artificial tooth is secured, while other types can be placed during a single surgery. Ask Dr. Raanan for advice on what options are available to you, and they will be happy to answer your questions.

Types of Dental Implants

There are several types of dental implants that a person may consider when looking to replace missing teeth. The type of implant chosen will depend on the individual's specific needs and circumstances.

Endosteal implants

These are the most common type of dental implant. They are surgically placed into the jawbone and are designed to mimic the natural tooth root. Endosteal implants are made of titanium and are typically cylindrical or screw-shaped.

Subperiosteal implants

These implants are placed under the gum tissue, but above the jawbone. They consist of a metal frame that is anchored to the jawbone and supports a prosthetic tooth. Subperiosteal implants are typically used for people who do not have sufficient jawbone height or density to support endosteal implants.

Zygomatic implants

These implants are used to support dental prosthetics in people who have suffered significant bone loss in the upper jaw. Zygomatic implants are longer than traditional implants and are anchored to the cheekbone rather than the jawbone.

Mini implants

Mini implants are smaller in diameter than traditional implants and are typically used to support small prosthetics, such as a single tooth or a removable denture. They can be placed in areas with limited bone density and are generally easier to place than traditional implants.

All-on-4 implants

This type of implant is designed to support a full arch of prosthetic teeth using just four implants. The implants are placed in strategic locations in the jawbone to provide maximum support for the prosthetics. All-on-4 implants are typically used to replace a full set of upper or lower teeth.

It's important to consult with our dental implant specialist to determine the best type of implant for your specific needs.

How Will My Dental Implants be Placed?

Once the bone has healed and the implant has been securely integrated, dental crowns are custom designed and crafted in our state-of-the-art lab and placed on each implant. Securely attached to implanted anchors your teeth will have superior stability, providing you with maximum comfort, rivaling that of natural teeth.

When your implant procedure has been completed, Dr. Rifkin or Dr. Raanan will give you detailed instructions for proper care of your new teeth. As with natural teeth, proper eating habits, good oral hygiene, and regular dental visits are important to maintain the life and health of your dental implants.
