Beverly Hills Porcelain Dental Crowns

Here at Rifkin Raanan we strive to apply an artistic touch and a scientific approach to even the most common dental procedures.

What are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown (sometimes called a cap) is a covering that completely encases the tooth, restoring it to its original size and shape — or in the case of cosmetic enhancements, enhancing its size and shape. Our Beverly Hills dental crowns strengthen and protect tooth structure that cannot be restored by more conservative treatments, such as fillings, inlays or onlays.

Several types of dental crowns are available. Here at Rifkin Raanan, we only use porcelain dental crowns, because these most closely match the natural color of your teeth. Porcelain crowns are also quite durable, and with reasonable care, they can last many for years. As with natural teeth, and any type of dental restoration for that matter, porcelain crowns, and caps require proper maintenance in the form of brushing and flossing. Our porcelain crowns are constructed to accurately match the size, shape, and color of your own natural teeth, thereby giving you a beautiful, long-lasting smile.

What Are Some of the Reasons to Choose Dental Crowns?

When you come to us for your consultation for dental crowns Beverly Hills cosmetic dentists, Dr. Rifkin or Dr. Raanan, will perform a full assessment and find out if porcelain crowns are right for you. Porcelain crowns are often indicated in the following cases:

  • Tooth Decay: When a tooth has extensive decay that cannot be restored with a filling, a porcelain crown may be used to provide strength and protect the remaining tooth structure.
  • Fractured or Broken Tooth: If a tooth is fractured or broken, a porcelain crown can be used to restore its shape, size, and strength.
  • Large Filling Replacement: When a large filling needs to be replaced, a porcelain crown may be recommended for added durability and support.
  • Root Canal Treatment: After a root canal procedure, a tooth may become more brittle. A porcelain crown is often placed to protect and strengthen the tooth.
  • Cosmetic Enhancement: Porcelain crowns can be used for cosmetic purposes to improve the appearance of a tooth with significant discoloration, shape irregularities, or alignment issues.
  • Cracked Teeth: Teeth with cracks that cause pain or discomfort may benefit from a porcelain crown to hold the tooth together and prevent further cracking.
  • Large Cavities: When a tooth has a large cavity that compromises its structural integrity, a porcelain crown may be recommended to restore and strengthen the tooth.
  • Weakened Tooth Structure: Teeth with weakened structure due to factors like enamel hypoplasia or erosion may require a crown to provide additional support.
  • Capping a Dental Implant: A porcelain crown is often used as the visible part of a dental implant, replacing the missing tooth.
  • Bruxism (Teeth Grinding) Protection: For individuals who grind their teeth (bruxism), a porcelain crown can provide protection and help prevent further damage.
  • Malformed or Misshapen Teeth: Crowns can be used to correct the shape or appearance of malformed or misshapen teeth, improving the overall aesthetics of the smile.
  • Bridge Attachment: Porcelain crowns are used as anchor points for dental bridges, helping to replace missing teeth and restore proper function.
  • Preventing Tooth Wear: In cases of severe tooth wear, a crown may be recommended to restore the tooth's natural height and function.

What Does Placing a Crown Involve

The procedure for placing dental crowns will usually require two appointments, however, we do provide high tech solutions that allow us to do same-day crowns for some cases.

In a typical case, your first appointment will involve taking several very precise impressions of your teeth. These will be used to fabricate your custom porcelain crowns. A temporary crown will also be formed using a mold. The temporary crown will remain on your tooth until your new, permanent dental crown is fabricated by our Master Dental Ceramist. When it comes time to place your crown, the tooth and adjacent gum are anesthetized. While the area is numb, Dr. Rifkin or Dr. Raanan will prepare the tooth, removing any decay and shaping the surface to facilitate the new crown.

When these preparations are completed, the temporary crown will be secured in place with temporary cement, and your bite will be checked to ensure that your teeth are meeting properly. During your second appointment, the temporary crown is removed, and the tooth is thoroughly cleaned.

When all preparations are complete, Dr. Rifkin or Dr. Raanan will place your new dental crown, onlay, or inlay. They will carefully evaluate the spacing and bite, and will then secure it with a “permanent” adhesive. Before your treatment is completed, you will receive care instructions, and you will be encouraged to schedule regular dental visits to routinely maintain your teeth and to verify the health of your new restorations.

Is it Painful to Have Dental Crown’s Placed?

Under Dr. Rifkin and Dr. Raanan’s care, having dental crowns placed is not painful. As a patient, you will not experience any discomfort while the tooth is being prepared. Dr. Rifkin and Dr. Raanan offer various anesthesia techniques to ensure a painless experience. With extensive training, skill, and experience, our dentists will ensure you are relaxed and comfortable through-out the entire procedure.

The Rifkin Raanan Difference.

When it comes to dental crowns, while there are many dental offices that administer this procedure, experience, skill, and attention to detail play an important role in the function, aesthetic and comfort of the final result. Thus, like all the services we deliver, we take the process of crafting and placing dental crowns very seriously.
